Php Photo Album Comparison |

Author compares installation and use of phpAlbum, phpGallery and phpGraphy |

Like most everyone else we keep accumulating digital photos that we have taken. And just like real photos, our digital photos are piling up in a folder on our home computer.
I thought: there must be some neat php photo albums out there that will let us clean up our act.
I looked at:
- phpAlbum from phpalbum.net
- phpGallery from encaps.net
- phpGraphy from phpgraphy.sourceforge.net
I expected a skinnable package that would allow us to group photos easily (and then likely share access with family and friends)
phpAlbum
phpAlbum appears to be at the top of the heap. It was easy to upload photos, set titles, categorize, etc...
Changing the templates around was also pretty clear.
The only issue I had was some of our photos were not aligned vertically and needed to be rotated. I could not determine how to do that in this package. I am sure it's there, just didn't find it easily.
phpGallery
phpGallery is very similar: templates used, categories, etc...
This package is geared towards some kind of sales, whether it's digital images or cameras - the software assumes you are selling something and just want a way to display pictures of the things in a nice way.
I don't want to sell something here and it got in the way.
phpGraphy
I was pretty interested when I noticed the sourceforge location. I always try to use something from sourceforge when I can.
However, like most freeware, phpGraphy appears to be the most immature of the applications reviewed here. It was unclear at several points how to fix things or change things.
Overall
All of the packages run using a simple default script that is changed easily via config file settings.
I would recommend phpAlbum as a pretty clear favorite over the lot tested here. |
