PHP News: AJAX Survey Shows Trend Toward Consolidation
By Darryl K. Taft ( 2006-09-28  7081 views. )
The survey, which polled 865 participants, showed that the Prototype AJAX framework was most popular among respondents, with 43 percent of developers saying they preferred it over others.

Next was Script.aculo.us with 33 percent, the Dojo Toolkit with 19 percent, and DWR (Direct Web Remoting) with 12 percent, rounding out the top four slots.

Richard Monson-Haefel, a senior analyst with Midvale, Utah-based Burton Group, prepared the survey for Ajaxian.

The survey allowed for multiple responses per participant.

Meanwhile, completing the list of results, 11 percent of the respondents said they liked the Moo.fx framework, jQuery had 7 percent, Yahoo UI (Yahoo User Interface Library) had 5 percent, and Rico brought in 5 percent.

After that Mochikit, XAJAX and Microsoft's Atlas toolkit—recently renamed to ASP.NET 2.0 AJAX Extensions—each had 4 percent.

And Google's relatively new GWT (Google Web Kit) came in last with 3 percent of developers polled saying they preferred it.

Monson-Haefel said one thing that he found interesting about the survey results "is that distribution of usage has consolidated since last year while the number of framework has expanded.

"In 2005 when we ran the survey Prototype, Script.aculo.us, Dojo, and DWR were the top choices among AJAX users in production systems. The same is true this year, except that a larger segment of the population is using these top frameworks."

Indeed, Monson-Haefel pointed out that in October 2005, 41 percent of the respondents said they used Prototype, Dojo, Script.aculo.us or DWR.

Yet, when the survey was repeated in September 2006, that figure had risen to 63 percent.

"So while the number of frameworks expanded from about four dozen in October of 2005 to about 160—that's a multiple of more than three times; the usage increased in the top frameworks and generally decreased everywhere else, Monson-Haefel said.

Moreover, "The long tail, when it comes to AJAX frameworks, is getting much longer and much thinner," he said.

"This suggests that despite the growth in the number of frameworks available, usage continues to consolidate around three or four AJAX frameworks: Prototype, Dojo, Script.aculo.us and DWR."

Meanwhile, Dion Almaer, London-based co-founder of Ajaxian.com, said, "People are favoring 'simple' tools such as Prototype/Script.aculo.us. Prototype and Script.aculo.us are being used across the server side (e.g. not just Rails, but PHP, Java, etc.)."

For his part, Almaer said he expected to see a better showing from GWT given the buzz that came out with the technology.

"I am interested to see if GWT moves up in the ranks next time around," he said.

Meanwhile, the Ajaxian survey also got results on what developers considered their favorite server-side platform.

PHP was the clear winner in this category, with 50 percent of the responses.

Java was second at 37 percent, .Net had 16 percent, Ruby on Rails had 14 percent, Python had 6 percent, and ColdFusion and Perl both had 5 percent.

And between 2 percent and 4 percent are using Adobe's Flex in some way, the survey results showed.

In addition, the survey showed that a quarter of the developers polled said they do not use any kind of AJAX framework, but instead work with XMLHttpRequest directly.

PHP News: Zend Raises $20 Million
By Don Marti ( 2006-08-31  7082 views. )
PHP development and support company Zend Technologies Inc. announced today that it has raised $20 million in series D venture capital funding. Andi Gutmans, Zend's chief technology officer and a co-founder of the company, said in an interview Friday that top priorities for the new investment are Eclipse integration, the Zend Framework for web applications, and the company's services organization and European sales force.

Greylock Partners, a new Zend investor, led the funding round, and current investors Azure Capital Partners, Index Ventures, Intel Capital, Platinum Venture Capital, SAP Ventures and Walden Israel Venture Capital are also participating, the company announced.

Gutmans said Zend is planning to continue expanding its services organization, with an emphasis on high-level architecture and training. And the company plans to expand its sales force, especially in Europe, he added.

A growing services organization is needed as PHP grows from mainly powering public-facing web sites to use in more business applications, said Mark de Visser, Zend's chief marketing officer. "The big banks are all deploying the same type of technology," he said. The Zend web site lists German financial customers Onvista, wallstreet:online, Deutsche Bank, and Dresdner Bank.

The widely-used PHP language is a contender in a feature race with hot newcomer Ruby and the newly resurgent Java. The Asynchronous JavaScript And XML (AJAX) programming style, in which JavaScript code on a web page connects back to the server to change the content of a web page without reloading the whole page, is a key area. Ruby's Ruby on Rails framework and Google's Google Web Toolkit for Java already offer built-in AJAX for applications that use those languages on the server side.

Version 6 of PHP will offer improved XML support and improve the process of developing AJAX applications, Gutmans said. "We're most likely going to be integrating Dojo," he said. Dojo is a JavaScript toolkit to simplify the often time-consuming process of writing cross-browser JavaScript, needed for AJAX applications.

Zend is working with IBM on PHP support for Eclipse, Gutmans said. Zend's Eclipse-based Zend Studio offers integrated development environment features, as well as increasing amounts of HTML design functionality, he said. "We're working toward a visually toolable environment so people can drag and drop components, write their business logic, and not have to worry too much about AJAX. They will still ultimately need to know a bit of JavaScript," he said.

"We are looking to staff up the Zend Framework team," Gutmans said. Zend Framework, still in development, is a web development which Gutmans characterizes as "not another Struts" but a simple web development framework containing "80 to 90 percent of what people need." (Apache Struts is a web development framework for Java.) Zend Framework is currently available as a preview release under the open-source BSD license.

PHP News: Sugar 4.5 Gets 'AJAXed'
By Sean Michael Kerner ( 2006-07-28  7049 views. )
Sugar 4.5 is the eighth release since the company launched in April 2004 and comes six months after the last major release.

"Prior to Sugar 4.5, Sugar has always been a very fast lightweight HTML-based application written in PHP," John Roberts, CEO of SugarCRM, told internetnews.com.

"We've taken it a step forward in 4.5 with the AJAX layer that makes it really customizable from an end-user perspective.

"We've completely AJAXed pretty much the entire user interface so you can drag and drop components to fit what makes sense for you as an individual," Roberts added.

The new release is also the first SugarCRM release since its partnership with Microsoft earlier this year.

Sugar 4.5 offers a Windows-optimized version that will run on Microsoft's SQL Server.

As a result of the partnership, Sugar 4.5 is also available under a Microsoft Shared Source License.

But Roberts stresses that SugarCRM is still be offered under the same Mozilla Public License (MPL) derivative that it always has been.

Windows users represent 35 percent to 40 percent of downloads for Sugar, though Roberts noted that not all those users may be installing it for production use.

"We're big Linux supporters, but at the same time what's really important is to listen to the requests of our community. SQL server was a high priority," Roberts said.

It's really about providing choice.

"It really doesn't hurt us to provide a Window-optimized distribution and provide it under a Microsoft Shared Source license," Roberts said.

"If people would prefer that why not give them that option? Open source is all about removing barriers not creating them."

SugarCRM is also now in the process of removing barriers for third-party developers to profit from its platform.

Sugarforge is the SugarCRM community site where developers contribute and share their enhancements and add-ons efforts for with SugarCRM.

There are currently some 220 projects listed on the site. SugarExchange.com, which is in beta, goes a step further and helps commercial developers by offering a forum where code can be sold.

"SugarExchange is focused on how we can create a revenue stream for developers and as a company hopefully that will benefit ourselves," Roberts explained.

The effort is different than Salesforce.com AppExchange, said Roberts. He claims that SugarCRM does not charge partner fees, offering a more open environment.

It is SugarCRM's openness and commercial open source model that helps to set it apart from its proprietary peers.

"Commercial open source -- the model seems to absolutely be working for us," Roberts said.

"Look at all the improvements in 4.5 and how many of them have come from the open source community and the forums. We wouldn't see that if we were a proprietary company building everything in a black-box environment."
